Margaret "Peg" E. Grothey

Laconia, NH-----Miss Margaret "Peg" E. Grothey, 95, formerly of 127 Pleasant Street and 388 Union Avenue, died at the St. Francis Home on Monday, September 1, 2003.

Miss Grothey was born January 18, 1908 in York, Pennsylvania the daughter of Ivan W. & Clara E. (May) Grothey. She was a life time resident of Laconia and graduated from Laconia High School in 1926. She obtained her B. E. Degree from Plymouth Normal School, Plymouth, NH in 1930 and her M.E. Degree from Boston University, Boston, MA in 1946. She did advanced studies at Boston University and the University of New Hampshire. She was a social studies teacher for twenty-two years, teaching at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, NH, Hanover High School, Hanover, NH, Laconia High School, Laconia, NH and Memorial Jr. High School, Laconia, NH. She retired in 1973.

Miss Grothey was a past president of the N. H. Association of Classroom Teachers, past president of the N.H. Education Association. A member of NHEA TEPS Commission, a member of the National Education Association, RTEPS Commission, a life member of the National Education Association, was a delegate to NHEA Delegate Assembly, a delegate to the NEA Conventions, a past member of NHEA Legislative Committee, past Chairman of NHEA Resolutions Comm., Past President of the Lakes Region Retired Teachers Association, 1st Vice President of N.H. Retired Teacher's Association, a life member of the National Retired Teachers Association, Past president of the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. a member of Pi Lambda Theta (National Scholastic Society) a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Honors women in education) and a member of Who's Who of American Women; past president of the Laconia Branch of University Women, Past Matron of the Mt. Washington Chapter No. 13 Order of Eastern Star. a member of the Laconia Women's Club; a member of the Mary Butler Chapter of D.A.R., and a member of the Humane Society.

Miss Grothey was a member of the Laconia Congregational Church and was a past trustee of the Church. She was a past member of the Board of Trustees of Lakes Region General Hospital, a past Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Laconia Hospital School of Nursing and a member of the Laconia Charter Commission.

Survivors include a brother, I. David Grothey of Tilton, NH and cousins in York, Pennsylvania.

According to Miss Grothey's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.

Burial will be at a later date in the family lot in Prospect Hill Cemetery, York, Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dorcas Fund, Congregational Church of Laconia, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia, NH 03246.
