James Michael Carroll

Laconia-----James Michael Carroll, 85, of the Congregate Living Center of the Taylor Community died after a short illness at the Lakes Region General Hospital on September 8, 2002.

Jim was born January 6, 1917 in Laconia, the son of former Laconia Postmaster and Mrs. Michael J. and Bernice L. Carroll. He was a life long resident of the City of Laconia. He was educated in Laconia schools, St. John's School (now Holy Trinity) and Laconia High School. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1940. He was a thespian and band member during his schooling. He returned to Laconia to manage his father's business, Carroll's Barbershop. He was the proud owner with his brother of the Mount Washington I. His college classmates had always referred to him as the "captain". He was a flight instructor for training Army Glider pilots until a disastrous accident in the 1940's. He also was an independent Stock broker for many years, owning James M. Carroll Investment Securities. He also was a licensed Real Estate salesman for Hounsell Realty and then Twin Rivers Realty. He was a life member of the Laconia Rotary Club, serving as its secretary and president. He served the City of Laconia as a City Councilman. He was very interested in local politics and engaged himself in the political campaigns of Bernard Boutin, Thomas J. McIntyre, and Oliva J. Huot. He was also an incorporator of the Laconia Savings Bank.

Jim was a communicant at St. Joseph Church in Laconia.

Jim loved his Irish lineage and spent a life time spreading Irish cheer to all who met him. He particularly cherished donating the „luck of the Irish‰ to his grandchildren. He was proud to be a father and felt blessed to be a grandfather. He was married to Joyce M. Pooler.

Survivors include two sons Attorney James M. Carroll IV and his wife, Janet Carroll, and John C. J. Carroll all of Laconia; five grandchildren, Christina Mae Carroll of Hyde Park, MA; Ssgt. Michael J. Carroll of Oklahoma City, OK; Tamara Lee Carroll of New York City; Joshua Joseph Do-In Carroll of Laconia and Stephanie Carroll of New York; and a great grandson, Nolan Carroll. He was predeceased by a brother, George Carroll.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, NH. Rev. Gary Kosmowski, Pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Lambert Cemetery, Laconia.

No flowers are requested. Your remembrances of Jim are requested to be made to the Holy Trinity School (for student scholarships), 50 Church St. Laconia, NH 03246 or to NH Catholic Charitites (for the aid of needy children), PO Box 686, Manchester, NH 03105; or to the charity of your choice.
