Fritz T. Sabbow

Laconia-----Fritz T. Sabbow, 79, of 41 Center Street, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Friday, November 7, 2003.

Mr. Sabbow was born December 6, 1923 in Medford, MA, the son of Fritz and Agnes P. (Dunn) Sabbow. He graduated from Medford High School in 1942.

Mr. Sabbow served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1948. From 1943-1945 he was a Non-Commissioned Infantry Cadre instructor. In 1945, he graduated from Ft. Benning, Georgia as a 2nd Lt. and served with the 3457th Quartermaster Truck Company, Third Army in Germany. He served as a lst Lt in the Corps of Engineers, Ex. Officer, Co. B 101st Engineer Combat Battalion and was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, Medford, MA, known as the Lawrence Light Guard. He was an instructor at the Massachusetts Military Academy until 1948.

Mr. Sabbow graduated with both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Suffolk University in 1949.

Mr. Sabbow was employed by FW Woolworth and managed a number of stores throughout New England from 1949-1963. He was the Executive Director of the New Hampshire Humane Society in Laconia from 1969-1995 and was founder and past president of the N. H. Humane Federation. In 1975 and 1985, he was President of the New England Federation of Humane Societies. He served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1972 to 1980 and was a member of the Fish and Game Committee from 1974-1980.

Mr. Sabbow was a communicant of St. Joseph Church and was an active member on the local and state level of the Knights of Columbus and was a former Grand Knight. He also was a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society Store and Food Pantry.

Mr. Sabbow was active in the American Legion, Wilkins-Smith Post No. 1 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Laconia Post No 1670.

Survivors include his wife, Verna Jo (Twombly) Sabbow of Laconia; three sons, Peter Sabbow of Laconia; Raymond Sabbow of Meredith and Fritz M. Sabbow of Keene Valley, NY; a daughter, Karen Fortin of Gilmanton; a step-son, Richard C. Carignan, Jr. of Gilmanton; two granddaughters, Carey McGowan of Cumberland, RI and Bethanie Torr of Manchester, NH; a sister, Rhoda Maxwell of Centerville, MA; and two nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by his former wife, Janet (Greenwood) Sabbow who died in 1993.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at 11:00 AM, at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, NH. Rev. Gary Kosmowski, Pastor of the church will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia.
