G. Alda Spencer

Laconia---- G. Alda Spencer, 90, formerly of Laconia, NH, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, at the Courville at Manchester nursing home after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

She was born on June 17, 1913, in Castle Hill, Maine, the daughter of Granville B. and Eleanor (Dudley) Cook. She attended schools in Mapleton, Maine and graduated from Aroostook State Normal School in Presque Isle on June 18, 1932.

On June 22, 1933 she married Stanley Earle Spencer and the couple settled in central New Hampshire. Following her husband's death in May of 1954, Alda became a teacher in the Laconia school system. She was known for her kindergarten classes at Academy Street and Bowman Street Schools and at Wyatt Park. After seeing her children through college, Alda returned to college herself to complete work on a bachelor's degree at Boston University while also serving as a residence hall director. After earning her degree in 1966, she stayed on to serve as director of Boston University's largest residence hall at 700 Commonwealth Avenue until 1971, when she transferred to the University's Office of Housing to pursue her lifetime passion for furnishings and interior design. Upon her retirement in 1980, she returned to the Laconia area where she continued her interest in interior design as a private consultant until 1995. Alda was best known for her love of life and travel, passion for color and artistic design, gourmet cooking and gala parties.

Alda was predeceased by her husband Stanley, three sisters and one brother. She is survived by her son Dana and his wife Mary Ellen of Shelburne, Vermont; her daughter Deborah Roody and her husband Randolph of Bedford, New Hampshire; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia on Monday, November 24th from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. using the Carriage House entrance. A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church in Laconia, NH on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be private. Those wishing to make a donation in Alda's name may do so to the Dorcas Fund, Laconia Congregational Church, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia N.H. 03246.
