Thomas M. Murphy

Belmont-----Thomas M. Murphy, 76, of 33 Mt. View Terrace, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Thursday, November 14, 2002.

Mr. Murphy was born March 25, 1926 in Laconia, NH, the son of the late William and Donna (Brace) Murphy. He had been a resident of Belmont since 1928 and graduated from Belmont High School in 1947.

Mr. Murphy served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was employed for twenty five years by the U. S. Postal Service and was Postmaster for the Town of Belmont, retiring in 1985. Mr. Murphy was a former Treasurer for the Town of Belmont and a member of the Budget Committee.

Mr. Murphy was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Lodge #32, F. & A. M. and the Peabody-Mt. Washington Chapter O.E.S. #35 of Tilton, NH; a member and Past Commander of the Charles Kilborn #58 American Legion of Belmont, NH and the Veterans of Foreign Wars #1670 of Laconia, NH; a member of the National Association of Postmasters; Plank Owner at the U. S. Navy Memorial; a member of the Tin Can Sailors, Inc. and a member of the USS Haynesworth Reunion Committee.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Pauline "Polly" (Edmands) Murphy of Belmont; six daughters, Colleen Lines, Pamela Salazar and Susan Rhodes all of Belmont, NH; Jerilyn Merrill of Jackson, Wyoming; Jeanne Murphy-Dwyer of Scottsdale, Arizona and Janet Lamb of Canterbury, NH; 8 grandchildren; a brother, Leo Murphy, of Belmont, NH; a half-brother, Durwood Woodman, Jr. of Ledyard, Connecticut; a foster brother, Russell Cushing, Jr. of Belmont, NH; two sisters, Eileen Moulton, of Lakeport, NH and Rita Dunbar of Concord, NH; two half sisters, Virginia Murphy of Florida and Shirley Maloney of Hopatcong, NJ; and a foster sister, Carol O'Neil of E. Weymouth, MA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a foster sister, Marjorie Udall.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at 3:00 PM at the Belmont Baptist Church. Rev. Charles Crook, pastor of the Church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Belmont Baptist Church, 49 Church Hill, Belmont, NH 03220.
