Leon Gerard Champagne

Lumberton, N. C.------Leon Gerard Champagne, 71, passed away on May 28, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC after heart failure and complications from Parkinson's disease.

Leon was born in Laconia, NH on February 4, 1932, the son of Wilfred and Jennie (Guyer) Champagne. He graduated from Laconia High School in 1950. He married Delora (Gonyer) Champagne on August 9, 1952 and they made their home in Laconia until 1967. Mr. Champagne worked on the Test Line and traveled extensively for Scott & Williams of Laconia, NH. He was a Boy Scout Leader during the 1960's and served in the National Guard for many years in N.H. In 1967, Leon moved to work for North American Rockwell in computerizing and development of specialty knitted fabrics. In 1976, Leon went to work for West Point Pepperill of Shelby and Lumberton, NC until his retirement in 1996. Leon enjoyed the outdoors and all sports and was a competitive tennis player. He is remembered as a kind, energetic, outgoing and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother whose humor and mentoring will be missed.

Leon is survived by his wife, Delora „Lola‰ Champagne of Lumberton, NC; his three children, Leon "Lee" Henry Champagne and his wife, Linda, of Wilmington, Delaware, Nina Dea Chambers and her husband, Donald, of West Alton, NH and Peter John Champagne and his wife, Lynn, of Reading PA; and his sister, Sally Ann Haddock, of Laconia, NH. There are nine grandchildren; Stephen, Scott, Sarah, and Jonathan Champagne; David and Amanda Champagne; and Zachary, Jeremiah, and Patrick Dea; one great grandson, Jade Champagne; two nephews and one niece.

Leon will be cremated in North Carolina. A Calling Hour will be held on Monday, June 2, 2003 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH. Following the Calling Hour, a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, NH on Monday, June 2, 2003. Rev Gary Kosmowski, Pastor of the Church, will be the celebrant.

Burial will be in the family lot in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia, NH
