Ellen Augustine Hoyt Durgin

Laconia- Mrs. Ellen Augustine Hoyt Durgin, 86., of 102 Court Street, died peacefully after a period of failing health on Monday May 20, 2002 at her daughter’s home on Alden Lane in Eliot.

Born in Laconia on August 12, 1915, she was a daughter of Oscar L. and Rose M. MacKay Hoyt and attended local schools.

She married her husband of 45 years the Rev. Charles L. Durgin, her role as a pastor’s wife was very important to her, supporting her family and her church were paramount. She enjoyed hosting the many speakers and missionaries that visited each of the parishes they served, as well as teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School

As an accomplished pianist and organist she shared her love of music, and talent with each of their parishes, and the Rochester True Memorial Church in Rochester NH, as well as a number of students who were also very important to her.

Mrs. Durgin and her husband lived in and served the communities of Freedom NH, North Conway NH for ten years each and Rangeley Maine for over twenty years where she was very active in the community serving as president of the PTA, as a Girl Scout leaderand attending community sports events. For the last twenty -five years her home was in Laconia NH.

Mrs. Durgin also enjoyed membership in the Christian Business Women’s Association attending meetings monthly in Alton Bay. She owned and operated Elm Shade Rooms in Laconia, for over twenty five years.

Mrs. Durgin lived and shared her strong faith with those around her. She enjoyed her family, especially her active grandchildren, attending many of their events.

She is survived by her daughter and son in law Jane and Glenn Robbins of Eliot, Maine, a sister Viola Daniels of New Jersey and her grandchildren, Jaime, Stephen, Kelly and Ginger Robbins. She was pre deceased by her husband in 1979 and her daughter Rose E. King in 1994.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia. A funeral will be held on Thursday at 2 PM from the South Baptist Church in Laconia. Arrangements are entrusted to Wilkinson – Beane Funeral Home in Laconia.
