Alice Beatrice (Sutcliffe) St. Laurent

Gilford-----Alice Beatrice (Sutcliffe) St. Laurent of Dockham Shore Road and most recently of the Belknap County Nursing Home, Laconia died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Thursday, March 23, 2006 at the age of 96 after a long and fulfilling life. She was the beloved wife of the late Wilfred Hubbard St. Laurent.

Mrs. St. Laurent was born April 23, 1909 in Boston, MA. She spent a happy childhood mastering “auto mechanics” in her father’s garage and the many activities of her beloved Campfire Girls. She graduated from the High School of Practical Arts in Boston, MA having won awards for her exemplary stitching and dress design. Alice married shortly thereafter and raised their daughter, Phyllis, and son, Fred, in Hyde Park and Canton, MA. She was a member of the Hyde Park division of the Eastern Star, the Canton Garden Club and the Ladies Aid of the Ponkapoag Chapel.

In the early 1950’s, she and her husband moved to Gilford, NH where they owned and operated St. Laurent Lodge and Cottages on Lake Winnipesaukee and the ski area on Mt. Rowe. When not occupied by her many business duties, she avidly enjoyed a myriad of hobbies including coin, stamp, and antique collecting, bird watching, gardening and all types of needlework.

In the autumn months, she and her husband traveled New England extensively and ventured as far south as the Florida Keys and as far north as Nova Scotia. She was an honorary lifetime member of the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club.

Mrs. St. Laurent became a resident of the Belknap County Nursing Home, Laconia in June of 2002.

Mrs. St. Laurent is survived by her son, Wilfred H. St. Laurent, Jr. of Marblehead, MA; three grandchildren, Wayne Johnson of West Kingston, RI, Bruce Johnson of Gilford, NH Jill St. Laurent Foster of Capitola, CA; six great grandchildren; her sister, Ethel M. Reed, of Hawaii and her brother, John A. Sutcliffe, of Wareham, MA. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Phyllis C. Johnson.

According to her wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
