Verna G. Currier

Laconia, NH-----Mrs. Verna G. Currier, 96, formerly of 18 Oak Street, died at the Belknap County Nursing Home on Thursday, March 6, 2003.

Mrs. Currier was born August 25, 1906 in Wolfeboro, NH, the daughter of Wilbur and Winnie M. (Brown) Gilman.

Mrs. Currier graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro and from Concord Business College. She was employed by the Merchants Mutual Insurance Company, Governor Robert P. Bass and Hon. H. Styles Bridges in Concord before moving to Durham where she was employed as Secretary in the College of Technology at the University of New Hampshire. After moving to Laconia in 1938, she became the legal secretary to Attorneys Wayne M. Plummer, Harold E. Wescott, Thomas J. McIntyre and James D. O'Neill. When Attorney Plummer moved his office to the City Savings Bank, she continued to work for him as Secretary and Teller for the Bank until her retirement. She had worked for Attorney Plummer 32 years and for the City Savings Bank for 12 years.

Mrs. Currier was a member of the Laconia Congregational Church for over 55 years. She was also a member of Esther #9 and Granite Hill #32 Rebekah Lodges and a Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy President of Esther Rebekah Lodge #9. She was a Past Marshall of the Rebekah Assembly of New Hampshire, and she received the Decoration of Chivalry from the Sovereign Grand Lodge in 1962. She was a member of Mount Washington Chapter and Peabody-Mt. Washington Chapter #35, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member and Past Chief Matriarch of the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary #9, and was a member of AARP.

Mrs. Currier is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline A. Mortland of Unity, Maine and Beverly A Maheux of Laconia, NH; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; one great great grandson. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles A. Currier, who died August 25, 1968, and by her daughter, Janice, who died May 28, 1994.

There will be no calling hours.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH. Rev. Carolyn Keilig, Interim Associate Pastor of the Congregational Church, will officiate.

Spring Burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia, NH

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Belknap County Nursing Home Activities Home, 30 County Drive, Laconia, NH 03246.
