Dr. Howard W. Halfmann

Laconia————Dr. Howard W. Halfmann, 80, of 21 Ledges Drive, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Sunday, April 21, 2002.

Dr. Halfmann was the son of Walter W. and Anna (Brickmann) Halfman. He was born October 8, 1921 in New York City where he lived for 25 years.

Dr. Halfmann attended Dartmouth College, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and New York Orthopedic Hospital in New York City. He served in the U. S. Military for the U.S. Public Health Service.

Dr. Halfmann moved to Laconia, NH in 1953 because of Lake Winnipesaukee, the ski area, the golf course, and the outdoor life. He practiced orthopedics for about 35 years. For many years, he was the only orthopedic surgeon north of Concord or Hanover and attended patients and operated in the Plymouth Hospital, the State Hospital in Concord and hospitals in Littleton, Berlin, Wolfeboro and Franklin. Eventually he centered his practice in Laconia. He served as President of the Staff at Lakes Region General Hospital. He was President of the Belknap County Medical Society, and represented New Hampshire at the American Academy of Orthopedic surgery for five years.

Dr. Halfmann was a former longtime member and President of the Laconia Rotary Club. He enjoyed the outdoor sports, water, winter skiing, fishing, and golf until maturity and arthritis slowed him up. He spent many very happy years with his wife, Eunice Keller Halfmann who died in 1988. The last years being on her beloved farm in Meredith.

Survivors include four children, Jean of Belmont, NH, Nancy of Gilford, NH, Matthew of Newmarket, NH, and Andrea of Lake Mary, Florida; one grandson, Geoffrey of Gilford, NH; a brother, Robert of Massachusetts and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter, of North Carolina.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 11:00AM at the Governor’s Island Beach Club House, Gilford, NH. The Rev. David A. Travers, Interim Senior Pastor of the Laconia Congregational Church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lakes Region United Way, 95 Water St. Ste. 1, Laconia, NH 03246-3313 or to the New Hampshire Humane Society, PO Box 572, Laconia, NH 03247.
