George Peabody Collins, II

Send a condolence note

Union, Maine——-George Peabody Collins II, 73, of Union, Maine died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at the Penobscot Bay Medical Center after a brave battle with cancer. He was born in Laconia, NH on May 21, 1928, the son of George P. and Inda (Peters) Collins.

After graduating from Laconia High School in 1946, he served two years in the U. S. Navy. He later graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston.

George made his career as a mechanical engineer, working at I. P. C. and Esty’s Machine and Tool in Bristol, New Hampshire where his desire for high quality craftsmanship served him well. His love for kids was evidenced in the several years he spent as the recreational director at the Bristol Community Center in Bristol, NH. He enjoyed these years very much. His commitment to public service led him to serve several terms as Selectman where his extraordinary honesty and integrity earned him the respect of all who knew him.

George retired in 1990 and shortly thereafter he and his wife, Arline, moved to Union, where he built a home designed by his wife. This enabled them to be near their children and grandchildren; family and family gatherings were important to him. During his retirement he was also able to pursue his love for growing things, and his vegetable and flower gardens surround his home. Retirement also offered George the opportunity to contribute to his daughter’s business by designing and creating beautiful wooden accessories for her fabric characters.

George had an irrepressible sense of humor and a kind, generous, and giving nature. He will be sadly missed by his family; his wife of 52 years, Arline (Davidson) Collins; his son, George P. Collins III and his wife, Elizabeth of Appleton, Maine; two daughters, Pam Collins White and her husband, Kevin White of Hope, Maine and Elspeth Collins of Hope, Maine; two grandchildren, Hillary B. White of Tampa Florida, and Joseph T. White of Hope, Maine; two sisters, Elizabeth Finnegan and her husband, Theodore of Durham, NH and Patricia Newton of Laconia, NH; a cousin, Judy Breen and her husband, Patrick of Durham, NH; a sister-in-law, Anne Parker and her husband, Leslie of Glen, NH; a brother-in-law, David Davidson and his
wife, Nancy of Benton Harbor, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, April 19, 2002 at 1:00 PM at Bayside Cemetery, Laconia, NH for anyone who would like to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Union Ambulance Service, P. O. Box 133, Union, Maine 04862.

Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH is in charge of the arrangements.
