Charles Robert Barker

Gilford-----Charles Robert Barker, 77, of 23 Liscomb Circle, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Wednesday, April 9, 2008.

Mr. Barker was born in Boston, MA on November 2, 1930. He lived most of his life in Boston and was employed as a bartender for forty years in the Boston area.

He retired to New Hampshire in 1992 and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, reading and family.

Mr. Barker served in the U.S. Army from 1947-1951 and served overseas in Germany, Japan and Korea.

Mr. Barker was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Laconia Post #1670, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 9995 of Somerville, MA, the Local #34 Bartenders Union and the Airborne Association of Fayville, NC. He was the Poster Bartender for the American Cancer Society for twenty years and raised money for cancer research during his time as Poster Bartender.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Evelyn (Hickey) Barker, of Gilford; three sons, Robert Barker of Holbrook, MA, Michael Barker of Derry and Timothy Barker of Laconia and many grandchildren.

According to his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.

         Burial will be in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.

         In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center (for Cancer Research) Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, One Medical Center Drive,  Lebanon, N. H. 03756.
