LACONIA, NH – Philip C. Davis, Jr., 81, of Laconia, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Lakes Region General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. 

He was born in Laconia, NH, on February 9, 1927, the eldest son of the late Gertrude (Collins) and Philip C. Davis, Sr.

WE REMEMBER: Upon graduation from Laconia High School in 1945, Phil was called to serve his country in World War II, joining the US Army in the European theater at the US Army Depot in Naples, Italy, where he met Maria, the love of his life.  Phil served in the U.S. Army for twenty-two years, first as part of the Occupation Forces in Italy, Germany, and Okinawa, Japan, and later in New Hampshire, New York, and California.  Phil was a personnel manager and employment specialist, retiring honorably from active service in 1967 as Command Sergeant Major, at Ft. Ord, California.  After his discharge from the Army, Phil moved his large family to the family homestead in Laconia, NH, where he obtained his B.S. from Belknap College in 1971 and served the State of N.H. Department of Health and Human Services for eighteen years, retiring in 1989 as Director of the Food Stamp Program. In retirement, Phil served on the Laconia School Board and was actively involved in community affairs.  

Phil was a dedicated and hard-working man who loved his family above all else.  He was a gentle, caring, modest, and soft-spoken man, who did everything possible he could for his family. He was a talented photographer, leaving his family a lifetime of treasured memories. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren for walks down Fenton Ave to Lake Winnisquam. At work and in his personal life, Phil strived to help people and to make the world a better place.  

 Beloved husband, father, and brother, Phil is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Maria Sica Davis, and children Madeleine Neale, Karen Arthur, Linda Davis-Husman, Philip J. Davis, Maria Lisa Davis, Doretta Simoes, Larry Davis, Lori Davis-Miller, Kim Davis, and Alida Davis-Sheridan and their nine spouses, twenty-six grand and great-grandchildren, and sister Marilyn Jorgensen; Phil is predeceased by his son, Peter Davis, granddaughter Maria Pearl Miller, sister Martha Davis, and brothers John Davis and Richard Davis.  

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH. Services will be held at 11am Monday, April 14, at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church St., Laconia, NH. Burial will be at Bayside Cemetery, Laconia, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phil’s name to Community Health and Hospice, Inc, 780 N. Main St., Laconia, NH.
