 Lawrence "Larry" Smith

Laconia----Lawrence J. “Larry” Smith, 82, of 1345 Old North Main Street and formerly of Sanbornton, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, on Thursday, November 29, 2007.

Mr. Smith was born December 12, 1924 in Whitefield, N. H., the son of Charles E. and Mary (McGoff) Smith.  He was raised in Concord by  J. Edward and Agnes (Cunningham) Quinn.  He graduated from St. John High School in Concord in 1942 and attended the University of Notre Dame before serving in the U. S. Army in the European Theater during WWII.

Mr. Smith was a longtime resident of the Lakes Region and was managing editor of the Laconia Evening Citizen for many years until 1991 when he sold the newspaper to the Foster family.

Mr. Smith was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.  He was a longtime member of the Laconia Rotary Club, a founder of the Santa Fund, was a recipient of the James Irwin Award and was involved with the Lakes Region Community Development.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy (Hurd) Pashley Smith, of Laconia; a sister, Georgianna S. Silva, of Concord; a nephew, George A. Silva, of South Easton, Mass.; a step-son, James C. Pashley, Jr. and a step-grandson, Matthew R. Pashley, both of Gardena, California.  He was predeceased by his first wife, Alma Gallagher Smith, in 1991.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 from 7:00-9:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, N. H.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, N. H. on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 11:00AM by Rev. Gary Kosmowski, Pastor of the Church.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, No. State Street, Concord, N. H.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 7312, Gilford, N.H. 03247-7312, the Community Wellness Center, 22 Strafford Street, Laconia, N. H. 03246 or the Holy Trinity Endowment Trust,  c/o St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, N. H. 03246.
