Joseph W. Gage, D.D.S.

Laconia-----Joseph W. Gage, D.D.S, 78, of 348 Union Avenue died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Thursday, October 13, 2005.

Dr. Gage was born April 19, 1927 in Laconia, NH, the son of Dr. Earl and Irene (Holland) Gage.

Dr. Gage was a graduate of St. Louis Gonzaga High School in Spokane, Washington. He served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. From 1946-1950, he attended St. Michael’s College, Winooski, Vermont where he was a biochemistry major. He continued his studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada from 1950-1951. In 1955, he graduated from Loyola School of Dental Surgery, Chicago, Ill and practiced dentistry for fifty years.

Dr. Gage was President of the Lakes Region Dental Society in 1960. He was a member of the State Dental Health Council for three years and served as Chair for two years; a member of the State Legislative Committee for three years and Chair for two years. He was elected to the Chairs of the New Hampshire Dental Society from 1963-1967; was President of the New Hampshire Dental Society from 1967-1968; was a charter member involved in the organization of the New England Health Conference, a former member and Chairman of the New Hampshire State Peer Review Committee; was a Charter Member and director of the New Hampshire Dental Service Corporation a non-profit Dental Insurance Corporation; a member of the negotiation committee with the Teamsters; First Vice-President of NHDSC; President NHDSC second year of operation. The “NHDSC” is now the basis for North East Delta Dental Insurance in NH; he was an organizer and promoter of the first State Dental Society Office Complex with established budget and Administrator Associated with, but separated from, The First Dental Service Office. He was appointed to the State Dental Board from 1971-1979.

Dr. Gage was a member of the Laconia School Board for 18 years and was the first permanent chairman. He was Chairman of the Salary Negotiations Committee and a member and Chairman of the School District Union. He was a member of the State and Federal Highway Commission and was a member of the Laconia Police Commission from 1986-1997. He was a current member of the New Hampshire Dental Society, the American Dental Society, the Lakes Region Dental Society, the New England Dental Society, the North East Delta Dental, Chair of the Lakes Region Peer Review Committee, the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners, a member of the Steering Committee NERB from 1980-1995, and the council of the National Board of Dental Examiners.

In 1973 he was elected Fellow of the International College of Dentist F.I.C.D. and in 1974 was elected to membership of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Survivors include his wife, Rita (O’Neil) Gage, of Laconia; six children, Marie Anne Gage Baldwin of Laconia and her fiancé, Richard Tapply, of Gilford, Erline Gage Johnson and her husband, Graham, of Madison, CT, Joseph W. Gage, Jr. and his wife, Kristen Gage, of Sanbornton, Brian Gage and his wife, Mary Ann, of Concord, Margarite Joyce and her husband, Glen, of Laconia and Elise Hubbard and her husband, Talcott, of Laconia; twelve grandchildren, Mark J. and Marley Baldwin of Laconia, Jennie and Annemarie Johnson of Madison, CT, Joseph Paul Gage of Sanbornton, Courtney and Tyler Gage of Concord, MacKenzie and Merrick Joyce and Talcott, Curran and Shayla Hubbard, all of Laconia; a brother and sister-in-law William L. Gage, MD and Irene Gage of Laconia; two sisters, Evelyn Strobel of Waltham, MA and Irene Munsey of Florida and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Atty. Earl Gage.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2005 from 4:00-7:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 10:00AM at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, NH by Rev. Gary Kosmowski, Pastor of the Church.

Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Lambert Cemetery, Laconia, NH.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Joseph W. Gage, D.D.S. Scholarship Fund, c/o Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 7312, Gilford, NH 03247-7312.
