Nancy Palmer Campbell
Send a condolence note

Gilford-----Nancy Palmer Campbell died at the Concord Hospital, Concord on Thursday, March 12, 2009.
Mrs. Campbell was born October 13, 1922, in Springfield, Mass., the daughter of Raymond E. and Mary (Heslop) Palmer. She grew up in Holyoke, Mass., graduating from Holyoke High School in 1940. She attended the University of Delaware. In 1942, she moved to New York City where she took a secretarial training course offered by Johns-Manville Corporation. This entailed working part-time for the company and attending Washington School for Secretaries half a day. As she gained proficiency in secretarial skills, she was promoted from Mail Room work through various positions, completing her 10-year career there as Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Finance. She was married to Richard H. Campbell in 1952, moving to Westminster West, Vermont, at that time. They had daughter, Molly, in Vermont. In 1956, they moved to Laconia, N.H. and settled in their house in Gilford in 1960.
In 1964, she started working at the Gilford Elementary School as secretary. She worked there until 1973 when she began working for Gilford Middle-High School, which was then being constructed and being provided with personnel and equipment. She resigned from that position
in 1982, after 17 years in the employ of the district. Later that year, she was hired for a position in the Town Clerk-Tax Collector’s Office in Gilford. She was appointed Deputy Town Clerk-Tax Collector and and remained in that position until retirement in 1990.
Mrs. Campbell enjoyed the outdoors as a member of the AMC and the N.H. Audubon Society, hiking, canoeing and bird watching. She also liked gardening.
After retiring, Mrs. Campbell had the opportunity to trace the history of their place, which was built in 1790. This led to interest in also learning the history of property in the immediate neighborhood. These studies were shared with the Thompson-Ames Historical Society.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Richard H. Campbell, Jr. of Gilford; daughter, Molly Campbell, of Cambridge, Mass., and nephew, Robert P. Fowler, of Jacksonville, Florida. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Jane Palmer Fowler, of Tuftonboro, N.H.
There will be no calling hours.
