Robert H. Turner

Laconia---Robert H. Turner, 82, of 7 Kinsman Drive and formerly of 44 Winnicooash Street, died at Lakes Region General Hospital on Tuesday, March 15, 2005.

Mr. Turner was born February 19, 1923 in Keene, NH, the son of Ralph H. Turner and Bernice A. (Davis) Turner. He attended schools in Keene and graduated from Keene High School in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as an aircraft mechanic and electrician. He attended Tilton School and graduated from Keene Teachers College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Education degree in Trades and Industry. Recalled to active duty in the U. S. Air Force, he served until August 1952 as an Electrical Specialist.

Mr. Turner returned to New Hampshire to teach at Concord High School in September 1951. He taught at the N. H. Technical Institute in Manchester for three years before becoming its Assistant Principal. He moved to Laconia in l968 to become the President of the N. H. Vocational-Technical College. After eighteen years as President, he retired with thirty years of state service. From 1986-2000, he served in the N. H. State Legislature.

Mr. Turner was a member of the Congregational Church of Laconia for 36 years. He was a 36-year member and past-president of Kiwanis Club of Laconia, a member of Lakes Region Management Club, and also a member of Mount Lebanon Lodge No. 32 F. & A.M. and had been a Mason for 60 years.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Clara (Knight) Turner of Laconia; a son, Robert H. Turner of Park City, UT; two daughters, Martha J. Turner of Bowling Green, Ohio and Ruth T. McLaughlin of Gilford, NH; five grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth H. Turner of Laconia, NH, Carolyn B. Davis of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA and Mildred E. Turner of Concord, NH; one nephew and one niece; and several cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Laconia Congregational Church, 18 Veterans Square on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 11:00AM. Rev. Dr. Warren H. Bouton, Pastor of the church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Robert H. Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o N.H.C.T.C.-Laconia, 379 Belmont Road, Laconia, NH 03246 or to Lakes Region General Healthcare, Nursing Education Fund, 80 Highland Street, Laconia, NH 03246.
