James J. Purtell

Sanbornton, NH---James J. Purtell, 88, of 44 Hermit Woods Road, died at the New Hampshire Veterans Home, Tilton on Saturday, January 17, 2009. He was the widower of Mary E. (Byrne) Purtell who died in 2005.

Jim was born April 20, 1920 in Boston, Mass. the son of Lawrence and Ruth (Bickford) Purtell. He had lived most of his life in South Boston, Mass. moving to NH in 1975.

Jim served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He had been employed by the Boston School System for many years.

Survivors include 2 sons, James Purtell of Brockton, Mass. and Joseph Purtell of Dorchester, Mass.; 3 daughters. Janet Murphy of South Boston, Mass., Barbara Frawley of Dorchester, Mass. and Leean Hewitt of Sanbornton; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence Purtell, of White Plains, N.Y. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Michelle Powers.

There are no calling hours.

Services will be held in the Chapel of the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Rt. 3, Boscawen, NH on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 11:30AM.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the NH Veterans Home, 139 Winter Street Tilton, NH 03276.
