Richard "Dick" Hackett Young Send a condolence note

Laconia, NH--- Richard “Dick” Hackett Young  formerly of Winchester, MA and Center Harbor, NH died Monday, January 21st at the age of 78. Mr. Young was born on September 11, 1929 in Melrose, MA, the son of Wallace and Dorothy (Lake) Young. 

Following service in the US Marine Corps, Mr. Young began his service to elementary education. After receiving his Masters in Education from Boston State College in 1958, he taught in Natick and Sudbury and in 1967 became the first principal of the Francis J. Muraco School, a model open concept elementary school in Winchester, MA. During his 20 year tenure, Mr. Young inspired with his dedication and his passion for interacting with students, faculty and families. He finished his career in 1991 as principal of the Vinson Owen School also in Winchester.

Upon retiring, Mr. Young and his wife moved to Center Harbor, NH where they enjoyed life in the woods and on the lake entertaining family and friends with great meals, great conversation and lots of laughs.  Not one to stay idle, Dick loved to tinker around the house, run errands, motor around Squam Lake on his beloved barge and golf at Waukewan Golf Club. In recent months, Dick devoted his love, energy and strength to caring for Pat, his wife of 53 years, who passed away in September.

Dick leaves his son, Christopher Young, and wife, Karen, of Newburyport, MA; Liz Benoit and husband, Bruce, of Chelmsford, MA; his grandchildren Samantha, Shannon, Luke and Jacob; and an extraordinary network of friends. In addition, Dick leaves behind a legacy of teaching children, including his own, to be proud of themselves and to know that there is opportunity to learn from every person just by listening. We will miss you BFKM!

A memorial service is to be held at 11:00 a.m.on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 at the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main Street, Winchester, MA 781-729-2580. Family and friends are encouraged to share stories, thoughts and memories at that time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Muraco School Library Fund, 33 Bates Road, Winchester, MA 01890.
