Vernon A. Simmons

Laconia-----Vernon A. Simmons, 86, of 10 Greystone Place, died at home on Thursday, January 13, 2005, due to complications of emphysema.

Mr. Simmons was born November 7, 1918 in Westfield, MA, the son of Jacob and Minnie (Borowski) Symancyk. He was the last surviving child of twelve. He was educated at American International College, Springfield, MA.

Mr. Simmons had lived in Manchester, NH for many years before moving to Gilford, NH in the early 1970's. He moved to Laconia in June, 2004. Mr. Simmons was a member of the Gilford Community Church.

Vern was a flight instructor prior to working for American Airlines as a captain. During WWII, he flew for the ATC in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. After leaving American Airlines, Vern worked as a salesman for Johnson Building Materials for thirty-nine years until he retired.

During retirement, Vern enjoyed family and friends as well as skiing, tennis and woodworking which included building and rebuilding several boats.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Martha (Heath) Simmons of Laconia; a son and daughter-in-law, Lew and Suzanne Simmons of Alton, NH and a daughter and son-in-law, Tina C. & Michael J. Donnelly of Germantown, TN; four grandchildren Mark, Ian, Rachel and Shannon; one great grandchild Lauren and numerous nephews and nieces.

There will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Gilford Community Church, Potter Hill Road, Gilford, NH at a later date. Date and time will be announced.

Spring burial will be in the family lot at Bayside Cemetery, Laconia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Dr. Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.
