Laconia------Mrs. Helen D. Martin, 95, a longtime resident of Laconia, died on Saturday, January 31, 2004. She was the widow of Willard G. Martin, Sr. who died in 1964.

Mrs. Martin was born April 29, 1908 in Boston, MA, the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Mills) Dey.

Mrs. Martin was the Executive Director of the Laconia Housing & Redevelopment Authority for twenty-five years, retiring at the age of 80. Previously, she was a retailer on Main Street and owned and operated a nut shop; was a floral designer at Whittemore's Flower Shop and was a salesclerk at Rogers' Stationery Store. She was employed in the marketing department for Community T. V and was also a reporter for the Manchester Union Leader.

Mrs. Martin was a member of the Laconia Congregational Church. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation; a member of the General Federation of Woman's Clubs and was a former president of the Laconia and State Chapters; was a longtime member and past president of the Altrusa Club of Laconia; was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and was Vice President of the New Hampshire Arthritis & Rheumatoid Foundation.

Survivors include two sons, Atty. Willard G. Martin, Jr. of Sandwich, NH and Richard A. Martin of Wilton, CT; a daughter, Janet D. Martin of Exeter, NH; eight grandchildren, Holly Blasbalg, Richard Martin, Stephen Martin, Melissa Martin, Helen Martin, Galya Martin, Rhoda Carter Sommer and Laurel Carter Perkins; 10 great grandchildren; and cousins, Andrew Dey and Annie Dey of Alvah, Scotland.

There will be no calling hours.

A Funeral Service will be held in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Dena McPhetres, Pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia, will officiate.

Spring burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia, NH.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Helen D. Martin Scholarship, c/o Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 7312, Gilford, NH 03247-7312.
