George J. Routhier

Laconia, NH---Dr. George J. Routhier, 83, of 25 Gilman Street, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Genesis ElderCare Laconia Center in Laconia, NH.

Born November 11, 1920, in Manchester, NH he was the son of Edmond Routhier and Ernestine (Poirier) Routhier. He is also preceded in death by a son, Martin P. Routhier. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lucille (Guyer) Routhier. He is also survived by three children: Dr. Marc Routhier of Frostburg, MD; Mrs. Denise Routhier of Kittery, ME; and Ms. Lisa Routhier of Simi Valley, CA; and also by four grandchildren: Jesse Hawkridge, Joshua Routhier Fenton, Jackie Routhier Fenton, and R.J. Lopez.

He attended local schools in Manchester, and two years at St. Anselm College. Following that, he entered the military and served during World War II. He was an Army Air Corps B-17 pilot, completing 35 combat missions with the Eighth Air Force in Europe.

Following the war, he returned to college and received his Bachelor's degree at the University of New Hampshire. After a brief period with the Traveler's Insurance Company, he enrolled in the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, where he obtained the Doctor of Optometry degree. He practiced his profession in Laconia for 40 years.

He served as a committee man with the Sacred Heart Boy Scout troop, and for many years as a lector in the Sacred Heart Church.

For the last few years of his retirement he served happily as a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, PO Box 6123, Lakeport, NH 03247 would be much appreciated.

Visiting hours will be held in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home on Sunday, February 8, 2004 from 1:30pm - 4:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Avenue, Laconia on Monday, February 9, 2004 at 11:30am. Spring burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia.
