Barbara H. Landry Send a condolence note

North Sandwich----Barbara H. Landry, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, of North Sandwich, passed away peacefully Monday, February 25th at the Genesis Center in Laconia, after a long struggle with Alzheimers.

Barbara was the daughter of Isabel (Ackerly) and Gerald Hallowell and sister of Lawrence F. Hallowell.  She was born June 13, 1925 in New York City.

Barbara grew up in Conway NH, graduating as the Valedictorian from Kennett High School in 1943.  She graduated from Simmons College in Boston in 1947 with a BS in Management and Retailing.  Upon graduation she worked as a buyer for Jordan Marsh in Boston and later served as the Personnel Director for Leavitts Department Store in Manchester.

After marrying in 1947, she moved to Amherst, NH.  Less then 6 months later she and her husband lost everything when their apartment, over what is now Moulton’s Market, burned.  The town’s residents promptly came to the aid of the young couple, something for which she was forever grateful.  While in Amherst, Barbara served as tax collector, selectmen’s secretary, administrative assistant and as Amherst’s first town administrator.   Her outstanding contributions to the town were acknowledged in 1977 when she was recognized as Citizen of the Year. She resigned from town office in 1991 after serving 37 years in town government and retired to her childhood summer home in North Sandwich.

Barbara was very involved in her beloved town of Amherst.  She was a Girl Scout Leader, member of the Amherst Historic Society and one of the original members of the Amherst Junior Woman’s Club, serving as the club’s second President and later being recognized as a Lifetime Honorary Member.  She also served as Treasurer for what is now the GFWC-NH Juniors.

Barbara was very involved with the NH Horse and Trail Association, serving as their Secretary and organizing their annual awards banquet.  She was a correspondent for the Morgan Horse, the New England Horseman and Manchester Union Leader writing a column, The Lunge Line.

Barbara is survived by her husband of sixty years, Laurence Landry, of  North Sandwich; three daughters and son-in-laws:  Kyle Marie and William Langille of Amherst, Drs. Shauna and Gareth Spurlock of Lovettsville, Virginia and Lauri and George Scharankov of New York City.  Barbara will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Christopher and Kimberly Langille, Stephen and Kaitlyn Spurlock and Lucas Scharankov and several nephews and nieces.

There will be no calling hours.

A celebration of life will be held in late spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Historical Society of Amherst, PO Box 717, Amherst, NH 03031 or the NH Alzheimer’s Association, 1 Bedford Farms Drive Suite 105, Bedford, N.H. 03110.

Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, N.H. is in charge of the arrangements.
