New Hampton-----Roger R. Hamel, 85, of 16A Brae Lane, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Sunday, December 14, 2008.

Mr. Hamel was born April 15, 1923 in Laconia, N.H., the son of Amedee and Lea (Bolduc) Hamel. He was a lifelong resident of Laconia and Gilford before moving to New Hampton three years ago.

During WWII, Mr. Hamel served in the U. S. Army as a Medical Technician with the 67th Field Hospital in Germany. He attended the U. S. Army Air Corps. Pilot Training School at the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Hamel was employed at the Laconia Shoe Company for many years and for the past twenty-one years, he worked for his son at The Home Beautiful.
In the 1960’s, Mr. Hamel was a member of the Laconia City Council. He was an active N.H. Representative for the AFL-CIO Union for a number of years.

As a teenager, Mr. Hamel, together with his sister, Rachel (Hamel) Drolet, were known as the Yodeling Twins performing country music for live radio all across New England, including WLNH where they had a weekly radio show.

Mr. Hamel, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, is survived by his son, Bruce R. Hamel, his daughter-in-law, Marcia M. Hamel, and two grandchildren, Marc Hamel and Heather Hamel, all of New Hampton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hamel was predeceased by his wife, Roxy (Harmon) Hamel, who died in 2001, by a daughter, Brenda Downing, who died in 1996 and by his ten siblings.

Memorial calling hours will be held on Friday, December 19, 2008 from 5:00-8:00PM in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, N. H.

A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at the family lot in Pine Grove Cemetery, Gilford, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Brenda Downing Memorial Fund c/o N.H. Technical Institute, Attn: Melanie Kirby, Chief Financial Officer, 11 Institute Drive, Concord, N.H. 03301.
