Pauline Shuman Chertok

Laconia-----Pauline Shuman Chertok, 88, of 29 Taylor Home Drive, Laconia, NH, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2006. She was born on May 11, 1918 in Winthrop, MA raised in Salem, MA and graduated from the Salem High School. Pauline then attended the University of New Hampshire and the Amy Sacher School of Design in Boston. She married Edwin “Sonny”

Chertok on November 19, 1939 with whom she recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Pauline and Sonny had three children, Susan, who predeceased Pauline, Fredda and Maxine. Besides her husband, Edwin “Sonny” Chertok, of Laconia, survivors include Fredda and her husband, David Osman, and Maxine and her husband, Peter Derby, all of Gilford, N.H. and her three grandchildren, Ross Lerner of Tewksbury, MA, Seth Lerner of Brookline, MA and Ari Osman of Rochester, NH.

Pauline was a gracious and welcoming person, a very supportive spouse and a loving mother and grandmother.

In addition to assisting her husband as an interior decorator at Chertok-Lougee Robinson, she worked at the North and South Shop and modeled in many wonderful fashion shows sponsored by the N&S Shop and O’Shea’s Department Store. Pauline loved her many years of volunteer work at the Lakes Region General Hospital and was honored in 1981 as the LRGH Volunteer of the Year. In addition to being an active member of the LRGH Auxiliary, she took a personal interest in the development of a children’s physical therapy program at the hospital. She was a Life Member of Hadassah, the Laconia Women’s Club, the Mount Washington Chapter of the Eastern Star, a past president of Temple B’Nai Israel Sisterhood. She was an enthusiastic golfer and member of the Laconia Country Club since 1946.

In her final days, Pauline was treated with extraordinary skill, tenderness and compassion by the nursing staff at the Eldercare unit of Lakes Region
General Hospital. Pauline’s family members not only want to state their appreciation to all these wonderful people, but also request that for those who wish to honor Pauline’s memory, a donation to the LRGH Auxiliary, 80 Highland Street, Laconia, NH 03246 would be appropriate.

There will be a family service and internment at the Chertok Family Cemetery in Belmont. A public memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, December 10th at 11:00 in the Rose Chertok Gallery on the Third Floor of the Belknap Mill, 25 Beacon Street East, Laconia, NH.
