Robert "Bob" E. Smith

Laconia, NH------- Robert "Bob" E. Smith, 79, formerly of 47 Cottage Street, Laconia and a resident of Englewood, Fla. for the past 7 years died at the Pine Rock Manor in Warner on Thursday, December 11, 2003.

Mr. Smith was born in Laconia November 14, 1924 the son of Grover and Florida (Desrochers) Smith. He was a life long resident of Laconia until he retired to Englewood in 1996.

He served in the US Navy during WWII in both the European and Pacific Theater. He was a hospital corpsman with the 2nd Division 2nd Battalion aboard the USS LST 307. He was in both the first and second wave of the Normandy Invasion. He was also in Guam, the Philippines and Siapan.

Mr. Smith was a barber at Busy Corner in Laconia for over 25 years and was formerly employed at Scott & Williams. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Laconia.

Mr. Smith was active in many sports and enjoyed camping. He also enjoyed hiking, swimming and spending time outdoors and was an avid golfer.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Laconia Lodge of Elks, the American Legion Wilkins-Smith Post # 1 and the VFW Post 1670 of Laconia.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years Lucille R. (Garneau) Smith of Englewood, Fla.; 3 sons Robert E. Smith, Jr., of Dover, Randy J. Smith of Matthews, NC and Jeffrey S. Smith of Philadelphia, PA; 2 daughters Deborah A. Newell of Concord and Linda J. Smith of Erie, PA.; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister Viola Corriveau of Belmont; several nephews and nieces.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday December 16, 2003 from 7-9 PM at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH, using the Carriage House entrance.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia Wednesday at 10:00 AM. The Rev. Gary J. Kosmowski, pastor of the church will officiate. Spring burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Belknap County Nursing Home, Activities Fund 30 County Drive, Laconia, NH, 03246 or the New Hampshire Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry Street Suite 427B, Concord, NH 03301.
