Dr. Donald Kingsbury

Laconia, NH----A memorial graveside service for Dr. Donald L. Kingsbury, 81, of 9 Ledgecroft Place and formerly of Gilmanton, will be held Monday August 8, 2005 at 1:00 PM at the Smith Meeting House Cemetery, Gilmanton. The Rev. Linda Bolton Pastor of the Gilmanton Town Ministry will officiate. Dr. Kingsbury died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, NH on Wednesday, January 19, 2005.

Dr. Kingsbury was born May 29, 1923 in Framingham, MA, the son of Lowell W. and Hazel (Austin) Kingsbury.

He graduated from Framingham High School in 1942 and in 1945 from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He did his graduate work at the University of Massachusetts, earning his Master of Education Degree in 1973 and his Doctor of Education Degree in 1974. Dr. Kingsbury had an extensive and varied career in education. He taught science at Windsor Mountain School in Lenox, MA from 1946-1949 and at Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona from 1949-1956. He was chairperson of the Science Department and The Director of Admissions at St. Stevens Episcopal School in Austin, Texas from 1956-1961. From 1961-1967, he was the Director of Studies at Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire. In 1967, he became the Headmaster of the American School in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and held that position until 1969. He returned to the United States in 1969 to become the principal of the Upper School at Holland Hall School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1972, he left Tulsa to pursue his Graduate Degrees.

Following graduation in 1974, he returned to Central America where he accepted the position of Headmaster of the Lincoln School in San Jose, Costa Rica, a multi-national college preparatory school and junior college. He held that position until 1981 when he accepted the position of Headmaster of Sun Mountain School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He retired to Gilmanton, New Hampshire in 1982. He and Mrs. Kingsbury spent the years from 1982-2004 caring for their daughter, Susan (Kingsbury) Fritts, both at their farm in Gilmanton and at the Ledges, a part of the Taylor Community, in Laconia, NH until her death in March, 2004.

Dr. Kingsbury is survived by his wife, Frances (Peel) Kingsbury of Laconia, NH and by a brother, Richard A. Kingsbury, of Yarmouth Port, MA.

There will be no calling hours.
