Lawrence "Red" R. Akerman

Laconia-----Lawrence “Red” R. Akerman, 85, of 164 Pleasant Street and formerly of Valley Street, Lakeport, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 with his family by his side.

Red was born February 15, 1920 in Alexandria, NH, the son of the late Lawrence F. and Agnes (Stickney) Akerman. Red lived and attended schools in Alexandria and Bristol before moving to Lakeport. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1940 and was stationed in Panama at the outbreak of WWII.

From 1936-1940, Red and his brother, Lyle, were loggers in Alexandria and at the age of 16, he would travel from Alexandria to Lakeport/Laconia where he worked part-time for Cook Lumber Co. (now the Boulia Gorrell Lumber Co.) After he returned from WWII in 1945, he returned to work at Boulia Gorrell Lumber Co. where he worked for over fifty years. After his retirement, he continued working part-time at Boulia-Gorrell until he was hospitalized on August 2, 2005.

Red was an avid cribbage player. He enjoyed his weekly cribbage night and every lunch break would find him in a game of cribbage.

Red was a former member of the Laconia Lodge of Elks No. 876 and a former member of the Lakeside Swingers Square Dance Club. Red was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He would attend any event his children, grandchildren or great grandchildren were participating in.

Survivors include his wife of 61years, Margaret “Betty” (Chipman) Akerman of Laconia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou H. and Paul W. Phelps and Carol Ann A. and Russell J. Beane, all of Laconia; five grandchildren, Paula M. Phelps and her husband, Manuel Fernandez Prieto, of Laconia; Christopher L. and Kimberly Phelps, of Canton, New York; Craig S. and Gail Beane, Chad E. and Heather Beane, all of Laconia and Curtis T. Beane of Gilford; six great grandchildren, Daniel and Triana Fernandez Phelps of Laconia; Bailey and Ryan Phelps of Canton, NY and Cody Beane and Lucas Beane, both of Laconia; his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy “Dotty” and “Skip” Stockley, of Hill, two brothers, Stanley Ackerman, of Damascus, Maryland and Russell Giguere and his wife, Diane, of Lakeport; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Akerman, of Groton, CT and Eileen Giguere of Gilford, NH; several nieces and nephews; and several grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his step-parents, Lena Akerman and Edgar and Ella Giguere; by his brother, Lionel “Lyle” Akerman, who died in 2004; by a sister, Patsy (Giguere) Noyes; by a brother, Edgar Giguere and by asister- in-law, Frances (Waldron) Ackerman.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 29, 2005 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 11:00AM at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church Street, Laconia, NH. Rev. Gary Kosmowski, Pastor of the Church, will be the celebrant.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Bayside Cemetery, Laconia, NH
