Gilmanton---Benjamin K. Twombly, Jr., 84, of 35 Stone Road, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Ben was born November 22, 1924 in Exeter the son of Benjamin K. and Margaret (O’Brien) Twombly, Sr. He was a life long resident of Gilmanton.
As a young man he hauled logs for Edward’s Sawmill on Stage Road. His favorite truck was a 1937 Chevrolet.

Ben served in the US Army during WWII and Korea and drove a GMC 6x6 for the Army Corp of Engineers driving lucky number C-13 building roads and airfields to support the war effort. After the war, he continued in the logging industry until he decided to become a machinist. He had been employed as a machinist at Quality Control Inc. in Tilton for over 30 years retiring at the age of 81.

He was a member of the Gilmanton Community Church and a former member of the VFW Post #1670 of Laconia.

Survivors include his wife Nancy T. Sleeper-Twombly of Gilmanton; a step-son Anthony R. Sleeper of Hudson; 3 step-granddaughters; 2 brothers Charles Twombly and James Twombly both of Gilmanton; 2 sisters Pauline Walker of Laconia and Eleanor Noyes of N.C.; 7 nephews and 7 nieces. He was predeceased by a sister Phyliss Emerson.

There are no calling hours.

A Graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 1:00pm at the Smith Meeting House Cemetery. The Rev. Christopher Stevens, Pastor of the Gilmanton Community Church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Gilmanton Community Church, PO Box 6, Gilmanton Iron Works, NH, 03837.
